What to try next

This page belongs to the Ophiolite you start on your own computer with Try it on your own computer. Opened there, it shows that Ophiolite's address in every step.

You are signed in. Your Ophiolite is at YOUR-ADDRESS and only this computer can reach it. It holds the well headers of Groningen, Drenthe and Friesland and the gamma-ray log of the HON-GT-01 borehole.

Open your project to see the wells and the log. To see the wells on a map, open them in QGIS (step 2).

The notebook and QGIS read the project with a project access key. Make one on your account page (YOUR-ADDRESS/account) under Project access keys, with the read permission, and copy it with its Copy button. It is shown once.

You need Python 3.10 or later with its venv module; on Debian and Ubuntu that is a separate package, installed once with sudo apt install python3-venv. In a new empty folder, download the notebook, install what it needs, save the project’s address and your key, and open it:

curl -fsS -O YOUR-ADDRESS/docs/notebooks/read-a-well-log.ipynb -O YOUR-ADDRESS/docs/notebooks/requirements.txt
python3 -m venv .venv && . .venv/bin/activate
pip install -r requirements.txt && python -m ipykernel install --user --name ophiolite-gallery
echo '{"schema": "ophiolite.local-configuration/1", "url": "YOUR-ADDRESS", "project": "nlog-netherlands"}' > configuration.json
ophiolite login --key-stdin
OPHIOLITE_URL=YOUR-ADDRESS OPHIOLITE_PROJECT=nlog-netherlands jupyter lab read-a-well-log.ipynb

Paste the key when the login asks for it and press Enter. Run it with the kernel the install line made: it reads the gamma-ray curve exactly as it was uploaded and plots it. The notebook gallery has more.

You need QGIS 4.2.2. In QGIS open Settings › Options › Authentication and add a configuration of type API Header with one header: name Authorization, value Bearer, one space, and the key pasted right after it. Then choose Layer › Add Layer › Add WFS / OGC API – Features Layer, make a new connection with this address, set Version to OGC API – Features and choose the configuration you just made:

YOUR-ADDRESS/api/v1/projects/nlog-netherlands/features

Connect and add the wells layer: 2,222 wells, each where its province’s register places it. Wells on a map explains each step and what to do when QGIS reports a problem.

You need only this browser. Open the log:

YOUR-ADDRESS/project/nlog-netherlands/data

Choose the HON-GT-01 gamma-ray log and press Calculate shale volume…. Drag the clean and shale lines on the histogram, compare the methods and publish the result: it is a new log with its method and picks, and the original is never changed. Shale volume from gamma ray explains the calculation.
